Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and protect your personal information (POPIA).

1. Who we are

Awake Media Agency ("we", "us") is the responsible party for your personal information under POPIA. [CONFIRM: registered name, registration number, physical address, Cape Town, South Africa]. Our Information Officer can be reached at byron@awakemediaagency.com.

2. What we collect

Gameplay scores & level reached	To rank you on the leaderboards and run the competition.
Basic technical data (e.g. device type, that an app install occurred)	To keep the game working and understand usage in aggregate.
Profile photo (optional)	Stored only on your own device for your avatar; it is not uploaded to our servers.

We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. We do not collect special-category information.

3. Why we may process it (lawful basis)

To perform the competition you asked to enter (running leaderboards, contacting and paying winners).
With your consent, given when you sign up.
For our legitimate interests in operating and improving the game, balanced against your rights.
To comply with legal obligations where applicable.

4. How we use it

The public leaderboard shows entrants by first name and surname initial only — never your email or phone.
We use your contact details only to notify and pay a winner, and for essential service messages.
We use scores and technical data in aggregate to run and improve the game.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

5. Who we share it with (operators)

Supabase — our database and hosting provider, which stores the data securely on our behalf as an operator.
PayFast — only if and when a paid entry option is used, to process that payment. [CONFIRM: remove if launching free-only.]
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights.

These operators process your information under agreement and only on our instructions.

6. Where it is stored & security

Your information is stored on Supabase infrastructure located in the [CONFIRM: EU (London/eu-west-2) region]. This means your information may be processed outside South Africa. We rely on the operator's data-protection safeguards as contemplated by section 72 of POPIA. We protect your information with access controls, row-level security (so personal details such as email and phone are never readable from the public game or website), encryption in transit, and restricted administrator access.

7. How long we keep it

We keep your account and score information for as long as you have an account and for a reasonable period afterwards to administer the competition and meet legal obligations, after which it is deleted or anonymised. [CONFIRM: specific retention period, e.g. 24 months after last activity.]

8. Your rights

Under POPIA you may:

ask what personal information we hold about you and request a copy;
ask us to correct or delete your information;
object to processing or withdraw consent (this may end your participation);
complain to us, and to the Information Regulator of South Africa (inforegulator.org.za).

9. Cookies & local storage

The game stores small amounts of data on your own device (for your settings, profile photo, daily streak and similar). This stays on your device. We do not currently use third-party advertising or tracking cookies. [CONFIRM: update if analytics are added later.]

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
